Attention as Currency

I regularly read Timothy Ferriss' blog over at Four Hour Workweek. He has great tips on productivity and getting the most out of today. Ferris is a unique dude and has a unique perspective. He does not speak the gospel, but he has some interesting insight. Here is a short quote from a recent post:

"Income is renewable, but some other resources—like attention—are not. I’ve talked
before about attention as a currency and how it determines the value of time."

This one really got my brain hurting. I started thinking about all the precious moments spent with my attention divided. How many times do I break concentration during my prep time for Sunday morning because an "important" email pops in? How many times do I put up a wall in conversation because I look down at my phone, not to answer, but to see who is calling so that I can throw the current conversation on the scale with the potential conversation?

What are the items of little significance that suck my attention from the items of great significance?

I think this Lenten season will be a good time to focus on this discipline.
