We had a great conversation in our Vision Meeting yesterday. We were openly discussing the idea of having a time in the gathering for conversation and interaction. We recognized that it can cause a break in the momentum of the gathering, although we did find it meaningful and effective but the question was raised about throwing the breaks on spiritual momentum.
I know there was a day when I wanted to speak while people were still mushy from singing and prayer, to step up right after an intense slow song was the optimum audience posture. These days I can go either way. I can step up with the people fresh off a conversation time and go, or immediately following a song or prayer. It doesn't make a lot of difference to me as the speaker.
Is there something to spiritual momentum or is it that the music portion acts as a focusing tool?

You know you hit it on the head with "the music portion acts as a focusing tool"
I would agree there are times when speaking that I prefer right from worship but many times just doesn't work that way. Either way God certainly has the ability to still be God and draw hearts with or without music.
We have our worship after teaching on Tuesday nights.(our mid-week Bible study) It actually lends to a longer worship set and a greater response from people.
We lead into preaching with the offering. ha ha. i guess God can work through His Word after anything.
