A Suggestion?

Last week I had lunch with a friend.  I actually saw him Sunday night, Monday, Tuesday evening and then again on Thursday for lunch.  Thursday was the first day that we actually sat down and had some time to talk one on one.  Bill is the kind of guy that knows how to say what needs to be said.  He has a unique perspective and is very thoughtful, although I am afraid that his willingness to say what is on his mind has made some people afraid to ask for his valuable opinion.  Bill is more in touch with the pulse of Seattle than most pastors I know.

Over the past few years God has really used Bill to say the right thing to me at the right time.  A couple years ago Tanya and I had been living fast with the church plant, having a baby and really didn't take a break.  In a few short, poignant words Bill suggested we take a break.  So the three of us packed the car and headed for some time in Whistler.  It was exactly what we needed.

So over lunch last week he asked me a very interesting question...

"Are you taking care of yourself emotionally?"

I said "Yes."

Bill asked "How?"

I thought a moment, then said "Crap!"

We talked about God's command to take a day of rest.  He modeled it when he created everything.  Created for six days and rested for one.  Establishing a pattern for healthy living.

We so often live life like scripture is full of suggestions that if chosen to follow will help us out.  But in surrendering to and following Jesus we find that obedience is really the key to freedom.

Funny how that works.  Sounds antithetical, but it is not.

So Friday I unplugged.  The entire day.  I actually watched one of my favorite films and was reminded that "what we do in life echoes in eternity."

I needed the rest.  I guess the FAQ works!!

How are you taking care of yourself?
