I value honest feedback. Feedback from the people around me has been critical in my personal growth. Although feedback centered on me personally come easiest from those I trust the most.
Proverbs 27:5-7
5 Better is open rebuke
than hidden love.6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted,
but an enemy multiplies kisses.
There are so many areas of our lives that we either choose to ignore or are blind to and therefore never take action. When we open ourselves us to feedback we are given an opportunity to grow.
Yesterday I asked my friend Robby to sit in on our Sunday Team meeting and guide us through a feedback session. Robby is gifted and great with team dynamics as well as leadership coaching. HE gave us some instruction on the nature of the feedback and how to participate in the exercise with honesty and openness. He then proceeded to go around the table and offer every team member feedback. It came in this format, "(insert team member name here)...what is holding you back is ...(insert feedback here), but what moves you forward is ...(insert additional feedback here)." Getting our brains wrapped around the idea that the feedback is not positive or negative and that it is all encouraging can be a challenge but the team responded great and fully participated. Once Robby finished then I gave feedback to every team member, as well as myself. Then we split into two smaller teams and completed the exercise.
The team dynamic shifted to a new gear after ONE time through a feedback session. It was amazing. I am still processing the VERY VALUABLE feedback that each team member gave me. All of it encouraging!!! Even the things that hold me back painted a picture of untapped potential.
One word. WOW.
If I take action on even one, just one of the items I received there WILL be forward motion in my life.
If you lead a team and want to have a feedback session let me know and I will help you set up the process in such a way that will be most beneficial to your team.
